I have been having a lonely debate about whether to use comfrey for something called a sports hernia.

A sports hernia is not an intestinal hernia. It happens when the fascia that surround the rectus abdominus acquire a tear (or just have a developmental weak spot) which causes the muscle to pooch along the lateral aspect. The tear can be anywhere from the pubic bone to about the level of the most superior aspect of the pelvis but it is usually a lower abdominal/groin injury. Basically, it is an injury to connective tissue that doesn’t like to repair itself.

Treatment usually involves strengthening the core muscles with physical therapy (increased muscle tone reduces strain on the torn fascia) or using athletic tape to hold things in place. However, it usually turns into a chronic condition and can continue to cause pain.

Would comfrey be an appropriate herb to use topically to encourage healing? From what I know, it can induce healing in other types of connective tissue (bone), so I assume it might be effective here as well. To be fair, I haven’t completed the school so the answer may be in there somewhere. Or is there another herb that is better suited to such an injury.

Hernias are hard to heal because there is often so much distance between the two injured edges. That said, comfrey topically certainly wouldn’t hurt and might have some good benefits.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
