My friend is recovering from surgery and is trying to avoid cellulitis. She is communicating with her doctor with herbal suggestions. What would be the best topical and internal herb?

Here is the definition of cellulitis from the CDC: Different types of bacteria can cause cellulitis, which is an infection of the deeper layers of the skin. This page focuses on one of the most common causes of cellulitis: group A Streptococcus (group A strep).

As such, I would think some antibacterial herbs like thyme or garlic, vulneraries like calendula or comfrey, and some alteratives  like plantain or burdock.

But let’s see what the Doc says.

Paige’s suggestions are all good. You cold also probably just do Calendula alone topically. It’s antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and accelerates healing.

Remember not to do anything internal if someone is on meds unless you really understand those interactions.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

                PLEASE HELP….

Hi there Dr. Jones,  began my Homestead Academy journey a week ago and I am so very excited. I would like to thank you to you and your team for this amazing opportunity. I am howevery hoping you could help me please? My son had a disagreement with a cow and got his leg jammed between her head and a steel cattle rail, as a result a week later he developed a CELLULITIS on his shin and outer calf mussel. He has done a course of Flucloxacillin antibiotics and though the Cellulitis is no longer hot, its still red, thight and swollen. I live in North Queensland AUS, 3 hours from my nearest town and have only a couple of herbs. I am wondering if any of them could help?? I have Hops, Cramp Bark, Yarrow, Skullcap, White Willow and Cayenne. All in dry and Tincture form. Any thoughts anyone?

                    Hi Toni,

I’m so sorry to hear about your son; my brother had cellulitis several years ago, and it’s not fun! I wish I knew more about herbs at the time.

If I were in your shoes, and the herbs you mentioned were all that I had on hand, I’d make a poultice out of the dried Yarrow, and apply it to the inflamed area. I’d probably take the Yarrow internally as well. If you look at Doc’s plant monographs, you’ll probably find a lot more information on the herbs you have and their specific uses.

Thank You kindly Sydney, his cellulitis changed into a haematoma and thank goddness the infection cleared up. Needless to say he a complete believer of the power of the Yarrow Tincture, He still has a massive lump on his leg and he has the tincture beside his bed and is continuing to put it on in the evenings after a shower. It has most likely served its purpose but he is so frighten of the pain and infection coming back and I dont blame him.

That is wonderful, I am so glad that he is doing better!

What does the lump appear to be composed of? Is it primarily swelling?

Would doing calendula topically still be appropriate while taking an oral antibiotic? Also high blood pressure meds. My sister is being treated for cellulitis with oral antibiotic, although she had to go to her patient portal to find out what was going on because all they said was, Yep, it’s infected. She waited a long time to finally go to a doctor because the pain was getting to be too much. It’s been two months of treatment with not much to show for.

I believe I have had cellulitis.  I do remember using Tea Tree  topically (without a carrier oil at that time because I didnt know any better) I may have used berberine internally.   I will try to remember more details.  I was in a pickle because I cannot use antibiotics!

I want to add, that recently seeing an elderly person’s whole lower  leg with cellulitis, was a big difference then when I had it.  I only had the beginnings of it (isolated dots here and there) and used  tea tree topically to combat it that way so it would not get out of control.  (I may have used berberine internally as well)

Seeing a whole lower leg with advanced cellulitis was a different story.  Unfortunately, this person has made at least three trips to the hospital to manage it and has been hospitalized at least once so far. Second hospital was more helpful then the first hospital.  I believe three different antibiotics have been used thus far in total.  (4th trip?) to the hospital in the middle of the night for pain is where its at currently.

I am standing in the wings with the low heat version of calendula oil.

Also finally planted all of the calendula seeds from my welcome package along with another whole package of calendula seeds that were also a gift.  A little late to plant, but, I think they will do okay.  I will have calendula coming out of my ears.
