If I have powders or c&s herbs for all the ingredients except one, and I have that as a tincture – how would I make the blend come out right?  Would I just tincture everything separately, then combine?  How would I know I have the right amounts when I use the folk method, then combine?  I apologize for my many questions, I’m over 60 and still asking a million questions – my parents encouraged my question asking my whole life!

          What’s the formula?

There were several formulas that this came to mind with, but for some reason, I neglected to write down which formula was the trigger.  Ooops.

Another question.  The venom and sting formula calls for Marshmallow root – I have Hollyhock leaves, but that won’t work will it?  Our ground is not really “root harvesting” friendly at all – loads of rocks – great big ones, and hard as a brick.  That coupled with the fact that my garden is so tiny that most plants will only have 1 of each type, so I don’t really want to “up root” them!  So I think I will have to buy my roots, and grow leaves and flowers!  Thanks 🙂

On the malvaceae plants (marshmallow, mallow, holly hock) the root is stronger than the leaf. On a snake or spider bite, I want all the strength I can get so I wouldn’t use the leaf instead of the root. For other, less serious applications the leaf is fine.

So I guess the better question is how would I create a blend if I have part of it in powder form, and part already tinctured.  Sheesh I’ll be glad when my mind slows down on the question firing!  Maybe some skullcap for the overactive mind…!

There are two approaches. One would be to combine the tincture in the proper ratio with the other tincture you’re making. So, if it’s a four-part formula, you mix 1 part of your old tincture with 3 parts of the new one.

There is some risk to that depending on what tinctures you have. Best to test a small amount first to see if they’re going to behave.

The second approach is to use the tincture you have as part of the total vodka used to make the new tincture by taking the tincture you have and use it as part of the total alcohol you need to make a new tincture of your other herbs.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Thanks Doc.  I think where I get lost in either method is this (and I hope I explain my “lostness” well enough).  So say I’m trying to make a blend that has 5 herbs.  I have 4 of them in herb form (powdered or C&S), but 1 is only available here as a ready to use tincture (simple).  Where I get lost is in the formula. 1 part of each of the powders – no problem, but since the tincture is already made up, how would I get that “1 part” that the recipe calls for?  I hope I explained what I’m asking well…  🙂

                      2 Echinacea

                      1 cleavers

                      1 marshmallow

This formula has a total of 4 parts. So, divide the total volume by 4 to see the volume of a single part.

If the total volume is 100 ml, then one part would be 25 ml (100/4=25). So to add one part of the new tincture, put in 25 ml. Now your total volume will be 125 ml.

If you wanted to add 2 parts of the new herb to the formula, you’d add 50 ml (2X25) etc…

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

THANK YOU – understandable by even me now!  Hopefully this thread will help someone else with the same question 🙂
