I am just coming out of a very rough 2 week respiratory illness. I tested negative for all the usual suspects, but this kicked my bootie. I don’t remember ever being this sick. I’m still very weak and tire easily. The reason I’m posting is that I started feeling like a failure as an herbalist, lol. I tried every herb I could think of to treat my symptoms. I did the test to “ask my body” if each herb would be helpful. But I got very little relief. Honestly I finally caved and went pharmaceutical. I started second guessing myself and even started doubting whether or not herbs were even helpful. I just wanted to share. Wondering if others have gone through this. I did lose my sense of taste and smell and was able (I think) to reset the nerves and get them back on tract with Valerian and kind of reteaching my nose what different smells were though!

Bummer! I’m sorry you’ve been so sick, and I’m glad you’re starting to feel better. While your dip in confidence is totally understandable (and probably shared by many, including myself), don’t let this stop you from continuing to help people with plant medicine. Perhaps there is a plant out there that you just didn’t know about, or wasn’t available to you. Some of these pathogens and illnesses are sneaky, and if the body is being a slacker or showing the slightest bit of weakness, they can “breach the wall” and score that hit. Remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, and continue to take it easy for a bit longer. (And continue to be vigilant with hand washing, and refrain from touching your face!) Now it’s time to focus on herbs that help you refresh and recover, and perhaps do a bit of immune boosting.

Sorry you were feeling poorly Julie. One of the important strategies with herbs is to take them Early, Often and After.
Sometime the most important thing is to get the rascals going at the very earliest signs of the bug.
I wrote a blog about bouncing back from a tough bug. Have a look.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

As a long time sufferer of respiratory problems (bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma) that hardly responded to any of the herbs or herbal formulas that I tried, I have just found an amazingly helpful remedy in ivy leaf and honey cough syrup and mucus relief remedy. Loosened, relaxed, and gave me hope again. Used a children’s formula from Zagreb’s in the middle of the night out of desparation and was really pleased and surprised at how well it worked. So went on the hunt for a recipe or formula. Haven’t been able to find a recipe/formula, though I did find a blog in which people reported they had made and used ivy leaf extract for years, so have been experimenting with decoctions of various strength, and adding honey after they have cooled a bit. Wonderful results so far. Maybe this will help you? A little background on my health situation that makes finding remedies so hard: have celiac disease, and many pharmaceuticals contain derivatives of wheat in them, even the ones that the companies have told me they don’t put any wheat products in their meds; was raised in a logging camp where all the men smoked; was in a mine explosion in which I inhaled a lot of damaging particulate. Am a dyed-in-the-wool herbalist and take care of my entire family with herbs. But have had a very hard time finding remedies for myself until the ivy leaf cough syrup. I now think that this remedy is helping me expel some of the particulate that has troubled me for the last 15 years as I now can breath deeper, take deeper breaths more easily than in the past. Am continuing to take a lower potency of the ivy leaf and honey decoction now to hopefully clear my lungs more, even though I no longer have a viral infection. Good luck to you in finding your magic remedy.

Darned auto correct! The children’s OTC cough/mucus relief is Zarbees. (However, I have visited Zagreb and found it to be a very interesting place.
