<span style=”color: #000000;”>I cut some very woody roots from Mahonia aquifolium today with intention of creating powders and tinctures.</span>

Several specimens were exceptionally woody (looks like a below ground bark). I washed roots and wonder if I need to shave off the ‘bark’ covering the bark.? My plan is to chop the roots, then freeze dry them, and powder them in a Vitamax with the dry blade used to chop corn and nuts. Next I was planning to make a tincture.  Any advice? Should I keep the thick bark-like portion of the roots, or should I shave them off?

Wash them and chop them up before drying. No need to remove the bark.

Make sure your freeze dryer doesn’t go above 110 degrees. If you’re going to tincture them, I’d just air dry them.

I just got off the phone with Harvest Right (the brand FD I own) Under the customize option you find the default settings.
Initial freeze temp is -28C (-18F)
And dry temp is 51C (123.8F)Too Hot

But you can change it there. May take it a little longer to dry, but after going through the harvesting effort, may as well take the precaution.

I decided to finely chop and air dry the roots. Then tinctured them after running the dried root pieces through the Vitamix. The result was a powder with a structure slightly larger than sawdust. No need to freeze dry.

                    Yup. That’s what I do.

Just found an Oregon Grape on my son’s property and we’re going to move it to my herb garden. This is good information. Thanks
