StudentOk, I know that Doc has said not to use herbal plants from the yard if you have dogs (because they pee on the plants) – and we don’t have dogs – BUT we have lots of deer all over our yard. So you know they drop little bombs on the plants which roll off, and they pee on everything – so what should I do? I tend to think that if I gather and soak in some mild vinegar water to “wash” the plants before using the leaves or whatever, that it would be ok. It’s either clean it somehow, or don’t use it, and I have a lot of plant matter out there on our acreage that gets peed on – but I would like to use it safely. Thoughts anyone?

StudentI often harvest from “wild” places, and common areas in my neighborhood (but not popular dog walks, or the dog park – bummer, because there is a boat load of plantain growing in the dog park, lol!). I even harvest from trees, and we have birds and squirrels, racoons, and what-have-you living in the trees and going potty in the trees…. I just rinse everything off with cool tap water, and call it good. In fact, there is a mulberry tree in my neighborhood dog park, and when it’s fruiting, I will help myself to a tasty snack while my dog plays – without rinsing off the berries – and I didn’t even get sick or anything! *I only harvest berries and leaves from branches that are well above height of the tallest dogs* I think the real difference between our pets and wildlife is disease, chemicals, and diet. Deer are herbivores — “clean” animals, whereas cats and dogs are carnivores who also eat carrion — “unclean.” Our cats and dogs have been medicated and vaccinated, and their diets have preservatives and other unnatural junk, whereas deer and other wildlife are not.
