I have heard that onions and garlic are extremely toxic to cats (and dogs). Since they are very good for humans I use a lot of them in my cooking. My cat really likes to have little tastes of my soups and sauces, most of which contain both onions and garlic.

I thought animals had a natural tendency to steer clear of things that are not good for them. Is she deficient in this area or are those actually OK in small amounts? I know garlic is recommended for chickens, but apparently, it does not have the same beneficial effect in cats.

My question:  Shall I cut her off completely from “licking the spoon” or is a little alright?

A little is fine especially if it’s cooked.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Dr. Jones, you were saying that onion juice is good for ear infections, is this a viable treatment for cats as well, or is there a different herb that is better/less toxic?

It won’t hurt them topically. Calendula topically is good for ear infections in dogs and cats.
