On the list of herbs during pregnancy and lactation chart Doc gave us, it says yarrow is unsafe during lactation. I have a tincture from Wishgarden Herbs for postpartum contractions called “After Ease” that uses Yarrow aerials. I know that Doc’s list is very up-to-date, but since I still have a large bottle of the tincture, how unsafe is it? For example, is it only unsafe for prolonged periods of time? Why is it considered unsafe?

I know you can use Yarrow for menstral cramps, so that might be one reason why it is a no, no in pregnancy. I think it can cause miscarriage.

Right, but I am asking about why it is unsafe during lactation. 🙂

The pregnancy & lactation safety list is very conservative. Unless we had solid evidence that something was safe, we prefer to err on the side of caution. Information about lactation safety is much less available than information about pregnancy safety. There is practically nothing about yarrow’s safety during lactation. I reviewed the information that is available and do think that “unknown” would probably be a better designation for that plant in lactation than “unsafe”.  Either way, I don’t think it has any indispensable benefit to the baby that outweighs even a minuscule risk so I wouldn’t use it personally during that time.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

                Hello,
I also have a question regarding yarrow during lactation. Is it safe to use externally while breast feeding? My daughter just delivered her first and had major perineal tears that required LOTS of stitching. I was listening to Doc’s recent “Yackin’ about Yarrow” video and it sounds like yarrow would be the perfect herb to use as a poultice or spray on tea to aid in her healing. Can it be used for this purpose without messing up hormones?

                Thanks!

Hi everyone! I know it’s slightly off topic, but do you have any experience, thoughts on using yarrow right after labor to help stop hemorrhaging? If so, as a tea, tincture, topical poultice? Thank you!
