StudentI really appreciated the lecture series on wounds-super informative, and I learned a lot! It seems like animals are geniuses at getting themselves into scrapes (literally :).
I first learned how to address wound cases naturally from a book by Juliette de Baïracli Levy called, “The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable.” She recommended cleansing wounds first with mildly salty water, and then with an infusion of various herbs (in all the cases I managed, the only herbs I happened to have on hand from the list she mentioned were rosemary and comfrey, and I didn’t use much of the latter on puncture wounds or gashes). Lastly, she recommended coating the wound with powdered dry rosemary. This process was to be repeated three times each day.
I used this method on many barnyard wound cases-primarily on goats, chickens, and dogs (some of which include infected dehorning wounds, dog bites, etc.). In each instance, I was amazed at how quickly the swelling and infection cleared away, and the rapid wound healing.
One time, our Labrador decided to slip in with our goats to our pasture, and was promptly attacked by one of our livestock guardian dogs (we couldn’t blame the LGD though, as he was only trying to do his job). Thankfully, my dad finally managed to break up the fight before he was killed, but he ended up with two deep gashes, one on his shoulder and the other on his ribcage (near his armpit). We first cleaned them thoroughly with peroxide, and then let them alone, but after about 48 hours they became extremely swollen, oozing, and inflamed. I then started addressing them with the herbal preparations mentioned above (yes, prevention would have been a better option-lesson learned!), and it was absolutely amazing to watch how quickly they healed. First the swelling and inflammation receded, and then gradually, the wounds/gashes started filling with new tissue from the bottom up. It wasn’t long before they healed up completely, and as bad as the gashes were, I can’t even locate any scars!
I am so grateful for Doc Jones’ lectures on wounds, as they have definitely helped to better equip me for the next wound cases that comes my way. Herbs are truly amazing, and we certainly have one awesome Creator!

StudentI also have a dog wound case success story! A couple of years ago, my dog was attacked at the dog park (someone was waving treats around, and one of the dogs was food aggressive). The other dog put her tooth all the way through my dog’s ear, and at first glance, I thought I would need to take her to the vet for sutures. But it was a Saturday, and emergency vets are hard to get into in this area — and gosh – Just WHERE were those sutures going to go anyway? The ear flap on a GSP is very thin. Then I remembered: “Duh, I’m an herbalist! I can treat this wound myself, and probably better, and less traumatic for my dog!” I always keep a bottle of gumweed tincture on hand, so I started applying just a few drops of the tincture to the hole in her ear flap, several times a day, and within ten days, it looked like it never happened. If you feel the underside of the ear, there is a tiny little bump of scar, about the size of a grain of quinoa. Herbal medicine is AWESOME!
