I am harvesting a large elderly Yucca filamentosa plant along with a lot of little offspring around it.  Some of the roots are up to 4 inches in diameter, some are about the size of a large carrot.  Is there any of the root that is more strongly medicinal?  For example is the inner part of the large roots still full of good stuff or is the part nearer the outside better?  Are the little roots  mature enough to contain a lot of the medicinal stuff or are older larger ones better?  Or is it just all good and doesn’t matter?

Hi Patricia, I saw a video on a species of medicinal Yucca from a guy named Daryll Patton, he said that the roots contain many saponins which are soapy materials that are beneficial for arthritic conditions. I am not so sure about the harvesting in particular sorry.

Hopefully Doc will have time to respond and we’ll know more than we know now – it’s almost time for us to be able to dig, and more info would be very valuable before attacking our “concrete dirt”!

As far as I know, yucca roots are yucca roots. SOmetimes the bigger roots have some root bark on them that you can remove if you want. If you’re using the roots for soap, leave the bark on.

Doc, on your yucca tincture page, it says “Yucca eaten as food helps maintain and support normal levels of gut flora” (maybe a leaky gut thing?).  So that got me wondering if putting the powder in my daily smoothies would be a good thing for continual/regular usage.  You don’t have any powder as of this post – will you get some in soon?  Then if the daily use of the powder is a good thing, I can also make some tincture for the times it might be needed.  My smoothies are getting to the point of having a lot of powder (which always sticks to the side of the blender) grrrr!

Yucca is safe for long-term use. But it does interfere with Vitamin K absorption if used long term or at high doses so make sure to take a couple of days off every couple of weeks.

Doc, a couple of questions on this topic if you don’t mind.

                    1. Is there more benefit in yucca tincture or as a powder (eaten or stirred into other stuff)?  I do supplement K2 (in the form of MK4), but don’t want to deplete or decrease it if I can help it.

                    2. I seem to recall (and can’t find where I read it), that the yucca (tincture?) is good for inflammation pain.

                    3.  What kind of dosing won’t mess with my K2, but still will do some good for pain?

Thanks in advance!  Hope you’re doing wonderful 🙂

If you want the fiber to feed your gut bugs, use the powder. There’s no fiber in a tincture.
