We have a barberry plant in our back yard, and it has proved to be a good first plant to tincture.  With all of the benefits of berberine, would it be possible to take it on a regular basis in small quantities, perhaps 1/2 tsp every other day?  In your lectures, you have cautioned that barberry should not be used on a long-term basis.  But when the doses are small, would long-term use be as harmful?

It’s not a plant I’d use long term. If I did, I’d take a few days off every couple of weeks.

Some plants are long-term tonics that you can take forever. Some are short-term plants for specific illness or issues. Barberry is in the second category.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

What about berberine makes it risky to take every day long term (e.g., replacement for Metformin)? Are there other herbs like bilberry, bitter melon, and fenugreek that would be better to take long term?
