Does anyone know of a support for the eye condition called Fuch’s dystrophy(blisters on the cornea) and cataracts.  The doctors rec. was removing my tissue and replacing it with eye bank tissue and using prednisolone the rest of my life as eye drops.  I am chemical sensitive and have reservations about it but he said I would become blind if I didn’t do it in the next few months.  Also he wants to replace my lens because of cataracts in both eyes.  I can still thread a needle using my regular glasses and if I drink water and use castor oil on my  eyelids at night I don’t have any pain.  Has anyone used herbal tinctures for this?

          Hi Sandra,

I have a formula called Eye Support that supports the eye tissues generally. I don’t know if it will help with the Fuch’s.   I will say that eye drops that the doctor is proposing after corneal replacement will likely have much less negative effect on a person than systemic prednisone would. Also, if you do decide to do anything herbal, don’t take any herbs for 2 weeks prior to surgery.

          Eye Support

          2 Bilberry Berry Leaf

          2 Eyebright aerial parts

          2 Gingko Leaf

          1 Marshmallow Root

          1 Oregon Grape Root

          1 Raspberry Leaf

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Hello Sandra, I hope you are doing well. After receiving permission from Doc, I’d like to suggest that you seek information on cataract healing from K.P. Khalsa, a respected Ayurvedic Herbalist and certified dietician-nutritionist. I recently attended his webinar on anti-aging and he said that cataracts are curable and gave a list of nutritional supplements that will prevent them (as prevention was the webinar topic). He recommends seeking a holistic eye doctor treat the condition once it has been confirmed. I can’t speak to the other condition that you mentioned but I would try to get consult to have all options on the table before I made a final decision. I hope sharing this information will offer you another option to save your corneas. Blessings

Hi Sandra, I have Fuchs dystrophy and had the DMEK procedure along with cataract procedure on both eyes last year. Great success! I will say that I waited too long on my left eye. The surface was so uneven and the damage was so bad, that even with new cornea tissue, I am not seeing as well as I do with the right eye. Please be sure to see a Fuchs specialist, not just a cornea specialist. My original ophthalmologist was a cornea specialist, but not a Fuchs specialist and did not want me to have surgery when in fact I should have had it sooner.  Overall, I am very happy that I had the surgery because my quality of life has improved dramatically. I can drive at night, I can see the text on paper and on my computer screen. My job was in danger prior, as it involves much data and computer work, as well as car travel.

The progress of the disease varies by individual. You may never need a transplant, or you might need one sooner. I don’t have anything to add for herbal or natural medicines. However, surgery – a partial transplant of corneal tissue – is really the only way to stop the progression. As for the prednisolone, it is required to prevent rejection of the transplant. Speak to the surgeon about your sensitivity to chemicals. Perhaps a trial of the drops pre-surgery or an alternative is possible. I was legally blind in my left eye and now I can read, drive and so fine work that I was unable to do for many years prior.

Some of the symptoms of Fuchs can be managed for a time with saline drops and salves. But there is no cure and no other way to stop the progression besides surgery. Hoping you find a good doctor who has done the surgeries.
