        <p style=”padding-left: 40px;”>I have gotten very contradictory advice on whether or nit to build up the soil in my herb garden.  Some say herbs in general prefer a “lean” soil and not to add compost and manure, and not to mulch.  Others suggest feeding the soil well just as I would for vegetables.

        </p>
        obviously different plants have differing requirements and woodland types will prefer a richer, loamier soil.  But if I am trying to establish chamomile, calendula, elecampane, and angelica, among others, what do you recommend?   I already have valerian, ladies mantle, rosenary, wormwood and some others in that particular bed.

        Thankful there’s also many medicinals growing wild on my property that I don’t have to try to grow myself!   Marshmallow has been one if my challenges to try to get started.

          Things I do:

          -Add lots of sand for stuff that hates soggy socks

          -Provide lots of shade for stuff that hates sunshine

          -Add leaf mulch, pine needles or other acidic stuff to grow things that like acidic soil

          -Top dress in the spring with compost we make

          We basically use the Square foot garden method of Bartholomew

          We also try to water according to the natural habitat of the plant…frequency-wise.

          Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

              Have you noticed any medicinal herbs that do better when planted together (companion planting) or any that don’t like each other?
