HGH I.T.
Homestead InstructorTopic AuthorBoy Oh Boy I wish there was an Easy way to implement an @Mentions feature on our site here.
Like twitter!
It would be so neat if you could just type @ and then somebody’s name in a topic or reply and just have it work, ya know?
What if there was a way to also send a notification when you get mentioned? How neat that would be!
It would be fairly complex… i mean what identifying data would you use to search the database for a specified user? There would also need to be some sort of sitewide mechanism to bring up a UI when the special @ key is used?… hmm tricky.
Another issue would be how do we set it up so only specific users can have the feature? We don’t want all 5000 students to be able to @docjonesorsomething for every question he would be blown up and it would make the feature a nuisance instead of a cool tool..
Guess what!
This is a test of that feature!

Wowie! That’s amazing! What talented and handsome web developer could add all that!
To use it simply type in the textbox the “@” symbol and follow it up with a firstname, or lastname, or username, or display name or anything else you can probably think of and a little box will appear!
Like This: @testerust
Just click on the name you want to call and the robot will do the rest!Thank for coming to my Ted Talk.
Leave any questions in the reply box with an @evan mention and I’ll reply in kind!

Homestead InstructorTopic AuthorKNOWN BUGS:
List of known bugs with this feature that will be resolved:
Users using their email address as their username will have two “@” operators in the function string which breaks it…. trying to figure out a workaround for this.-

Homestead InstructorTopic Authoryes, type “@” then three or four characters then wait for the search popup, and click the name from the list, and hit enter.
you may need to try a couple variations to find the right user sometimes, try first name, last name, username, or display name to try and find the correct user.
