StudentWe added a German Shephard puppy 18 weeks old, he has developed a really itchy right ear, which coincidently is the same on our three year old black lab healer mix? Sometimes it smells yeasty? Have been cleaning ear canal etc but does not seem any better and we have using a cone too. Poor pup. Would Yerba mate or green tea hurt the dog? Anything else we can do please let me know. Thanks

Homestead InstructorI’ve never used Yerba mate on anything…so no experience there.
I’ve meant to try an infusion of Monarda fistulosa in yeasty ears….guess I should go out to the drying room and get that stuff processed.

My german shepard has a sensitive ear also. An examination by the vet did not show ear mites. Doc Jones said that he uses onion juice on earaches. Would this work on dogs as well? or maybe olive oil infused with lemon balm? Advice?

If it’s an actual “earache” it should work fine. If it’s an outer ear infection (as it generally is in dogs), I don’t know…oddly enough I’ve nevere tried onion juice in a dog. It’d probably be good. Garlic is.

i have been using garlic oil mixed with coconut oil and just a drop or two of echinacea tincture (my oil infusion is still in the making 🙂 ) and my shepherd”s ear seems to be improving. No longer yelps when ear is touched. Holding her ear up more. Seems to be working. fyi

🙂 Keep us posted.
I finally got a chance to use some Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) on a yeast case and so far am having promising results.

Doc, I have your book and started my first module recently! I’m very happy with it and look forward to it’s many uses. My question is my Lab is having ear issues that we treat with Ottomax. is there an herbal remedy that would be as good or better than ottomax? I was considering using an oil infused w/hollyhock & calendula… what would you recommend?

Most of those dogs have a significant yeast population in the ear. You’d probably want a stronger anti-fungal than Calendula alone.
We have this one that would be good:

Ingredients: Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), Black walnut, Chamomile, Garlic, Goldenseal
If there is an allergic component (there usually is), use this too:
