Which parts are the medicine? – Homestead Academy

  Aaaargh…… I get all set to work with a plant and I realize that none of my sources tell me which plant parts to use as medicine. :irked:
  
  Sometimes the aerial parts serve different purposes than roots, for example.
  
  Is there a list, a source, a way, that will help me find which parts of the plant are the medicine?
  
  And when is the best time to harvest? ( I undestand generally, but I’d like specifics.)
  
  When it’s time to edit the HGH materials, this would be a helpful bit of info to include.

  We have a book for sale on our site that covers those topics for the plants included.
  
  Other than that if you have a couple that I can address then search to see if they are listed here or start a new topic for each.

  Since I’m in the Southeast, I went online to see if Moore had an eastern version and didn’t find anything. Not that there’s nothing there, but I didn’t find it.
  
  But I did find a publication called Herbal Materia Medica (5th ed) which has “Outlines of over 500 major botanical medicines, with the preferred forms and methods of their preparations, strengths, solutions, the most common adult dosages, environmental status, and potential dangers” by Moore.
  
  Out of print. Darn.

  I found a free PDF download of it at .
  
  I’m new enough to not know a lot about what’s out there, but this looked good. Concise (very concise) and broad-ranging.
  
  57 pieces of paper required to print it out, BUT much of the words didn’t translate into letters. Instead, they were little boxes. Reminds me of OLD time encoding problems. Apparently my printer converts the PDF download stuff to PDF again before printing and this causes the boxes….
  
  So you can read it on the screen, but printing is an issue. At least the info is there.
  
  Don’t print this until a work-around is established or you’ll waste a lot of paper.
  
  I feel better about finding the plant part info now. 🙄

  All of the modules in the HGH modules indicate what part of the plant to use. Just look in the “Plants” section of each lesson and it will tell you what part is medicinal.
  
  Also, there is a Quizlet.com card set that is all about plant parts used. Have a look at that.
