So, here in the south and Midwest we have this stuff. Is it usable medicinally?

The plant volunteered in my grape arbor and it looks sooooo much like E. perfolium. And it talked to me some. Very friendly and welcoming. The insects love the flowers.

But I haven’t been 100% convinced, something kept niggling at me, that it was NOT E. perfolium and today I got confirmation that it was E. serotinum instead.

It’s related to Joe Pye weed and was used by the Houma Indians kinda like gravel root, so I read.

        But….

        I dunno nuttin’.

And I’m not going to ingest or use it until I am sure that I know what it’s good for.

So I have a quart of dried plant and flower material which is so pretty in the jar and I need to use it or compost it. Whaddya know?

There are LOTS of good sites that can give you information on that plant. Do a web search (which is what I would have to do) and read at least THREE of them to get a better idea of what it can and cannot do. I even do that for plants that I am familiar with since none of us knows everything about every plant.

I have been all over the web looking up this plant, thank you.

Your suggestion is a worthy one.

Now I am turning to a specific resource….this forum…. for its expertise.

Do any of you have personal experience or knowledge about this plant?

The next time I post a question like this I will be sure to reference the personal aspect of the question.

I’ve never used (or heard of) the E. serotinum but have used the more commonly used boneset species E. perfoliatum.

There are several plants in that genus (including gravel root). Some of them have very different properties than boneset. So make sure you check it out.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
