        Hi Everyone,

I am looking for guidance on a skin issue that my 6 month old Chinese Crested/Pom mix has developed in the last couple of weeks.

The Chinese Crested is a hairless dog breed, prone to acne.

As his body has started to mature (testicles dropping), the acne has started. I keep his bedding and clothing clean, bathe him once a week with oatmeal shampoo, and he is on a species-appropriate, semi-raw diet.

I am planning to have him neutered soon, and hope it will help but want to treat him herbally in the interim (and beyond) for this skin problem. Many Chinese Cresteds, from my understanding, deal with acne their whole life.

I have been using a spray with Thyme, and it helps, but new acne keeps appearing. I don’t believe it is allergies, as he has gotten no relief from a low dose of benadryl.

He is a shelter dog, adopted by me at 7 weeks. Other than a nasty battle with Parvo at 8 weeks (and 2 lbs), he has been very healthy.

I am wondering if it would be safe to start him on a low regime of Vitex (Vitex agnus-castus) to try to regulate his hormones. I am concerned that he may be too young, and I don’t want to do anything to mess up his hormones if that is possible, now that he is entering his teenage dog stage.

I have tried to find information specific to this herb’s use on a dog his age and breed and can’t find anything. I have read a lot about non-herbal acne treatments, but would prefer to treat him herbally, especially if it is a long term situation. Poor little guy is covered with acne on his shoulders and back and it must be uncomfortable.

I realize this question will not be relatable to many other pups, and I appreciate any information and/or suggestions you may be able to offer.

(PS This is my first post. Thank you for your help!!)

You’re correct that most acne is hormonal…at least in humans.

I’d be inclined to wait until he’s neutered and see what that changes. He’s pretty young for herbs.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
