StudentMy daughter is having trouble. In the last month she has put on 20 lbs….seemingly almost overnight…all around the midsection. She also has had spotting on a regular basis. Periods are normal and regular. She has had a tremendous amount of stress in her life(it started about the time the weight gain and spotting started), and she doesn’t sleep well.
She had a similar situation a couple years ago, and it turned out to be a gut bacteria imbalance, so I thought I would start with Dr. Jones’s Prebiotic Formula. The ingredients are burdock, dandelion leaf, elecampane, flax, garlic, oat straw. Would these be safe if she became pregnant? Does flax mess with the estrogen’s work within a cycle?
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

StudentElecampane is not safe during pregnancy. I would be careful with using theraputic doses of seeds when pregnant without really researching them. I know there is something called the seed cycle (or something like that) where you eat different seeds to help during different parts of your cycle, so they can definitely affect hormones.
If stress is the cause, then I would try to alleviate it as much as possible. Therapy, self-care, and good sleep hygiene are all something I would look into. Does she have a community she can rely on for help if she needs it? Is her diet relatively healthy? Does she have any time for herself to just do something fun with friends or to decompress at the end of the day?
When I was pregnant with my son, I was under immense stress (like the placenta showed signs of chronic stress and low nutritional flow to the baby). I had bleeding that lasted for a while at around 12 weeks that seemed directly related to the stress. It took my family going to stay with my in-laws in another state for two weeks to just get away from the stressful situation we were in. I was able to start healing relatively quickly after beginning our stay. It might just take her getting away for a bit to help her relax a little easier.

StudentTopic AuthorMegan, thank you so much for the reply! I will look into the seed cycle…I do remember seeing something about this somewhere a couple years ago….I think it was in relation to infertility and treating it through natural methods. I appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts. I do think stress is the underlying cause to my daughter’s issues. Life can be pretty difficult at times.

StudentWhy is flax seed not safe during pregnancy? At what dose does it become a problem? I just finished a pregnancy where I ate a tablespoon of ground flax every single day of the pregnancy. My baby seems to be doing quite well…. I’m a new student so forgive me if the answer is somewhere in the program however I didn’t see for flax seed listed as one of the deep dive herbs… thanks!
