StudentHi all
I hope this isn’t a dumb question. But I got to thinking if you can overdose on vitamins etc. why couldn’t this happen with herbs. We understand enough to know that each herb has many different jobs to do and if taking a variety of concoctions to cover a couple of health issues; is it then possible to overdose on some of these areas. For example, if using some herbs that are for whatever purpose, but they all contain a calming effect and maybe also lower blood pressure. Could this then become harmful?

StudentThis is what came to mind…I gave my kiddo fruit sometimes to keep her little insides moving. Too much fruit, and too much movement…too much of a good thing brought on cramping and misery and an unhappy kiddo. I need antihistimines in summer like crazy…but too much and I need to be either peeled off the ceiling or rolled into a hole. I’m sure there are fancier ways of putting it, and I’d suppose it has to do with the actual constituents of the plant themselves. Some things are mild and might never be too much. Some herbs have more than one action to be aware of. Some are so good-natured (pun intended) that they serve to balance, so the balance should be watched for. I’ll bet Doc has a much better answer, but that’s what came to mind. And to my mind, no questions should go unasked…if you thought of it, guaranteed so did someone else. I have found this to be one of the most friendly, helpful places ever! Be well and have a fantastic day!

StudentTopic AuthorHi Jodie
Thank you for your reply. For years I believed herbs were safe because they were natural. It wasn’t until I looked into this more that i realized they could be just as dangerous if not used correctly. I have certainly become more aware of what is going into the food i purchase and that I am eating.

Homestead InstructorHerbs certainly have wider safety margins than most pharmaceuticals but you can certainly over dose on some of them. Follow the dosing recommendations on the various lessons and you’ll be fine.
Most folks that leave my practice have 3-5 different tinctures they’re going to take at the same time.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
