My husbnd is a DAV with really painful diabetic neuropthy. He has been given a medication from his Dr, but if he takes it 2 days in a row ends up with diahrrea and cramps. Not sustainable. I am looking for anything which can help him with the pain. Its mostly hands and feet, but occasionally elsewhere.  What would be the best herbs and the best delivery? I was thinking Skullcap/hops? tincture? Oral? Both?  Is there something that would work better?

Vitamins B1, B6, and B12 help with nerve health. They help maintain and repair the myelin sheath as well as the nerve itself.

For the pain aspect, consider the D vitamins. Direct exposure to sunlight is best since your husband’s body will manufacture more than just D3, though supplementation is far more beneficial than no exposure at all.

Following up with an oil made from St. John’s Wort or Angelica rubbed onto his feet and other affected areas may help with the pain and other sensations he’s experiencing.

Finally, while it’s not herbal or a supplement, anything topical with lidocaine may give him temporary relief allowing sleep.

Best of luck to you both.

What other D vitamins? The reason I ask, is he has Bromide poisoning from his time in the navy and has to stay out of direct sunlight or he starts peeling and bleeding. It was so bad that it affected his post military career, he was a background investigator and it was very unnerving to the person he was interviewing, when a piece of his skin would slough off his face during an interview.  Its under control now as long as he isn’t in direct sunlight.

D2 and D3 are available commercially. D3 had been shown to result in higher blood levels of vitamin D and is the preferred form. Humans manufacture vitamin D from sunlight naturally – and a whole lot of Americans (and Europeans) are chronically short on this one.

D3 is commercially derived from sheep wool so no animals are harmed during the process.

It’s hard to find good natural sources from diet alone and supplements are a decent source. Vitamin D is necessary for processing Calcium and supports your immune system. This, vitamin C and Zinc are helpful for fighting any immune problems including wound healing. It’s one of the fat soluble vitamins so is absorbed better if you take it with some food (or a snack) that has fat/oil in it as well.

I am experiencing leg neuropathy as a direct result of  my recent diagnosis of Diabetes. I am an Indigenous  Metis Woman from Canada who has a long line of family members who have had diabetes. Because of this knowledge, over the past 30 years I ate mostly organic foods, rarely deep fried, rarely drank alcohol, walked over an hour every day with dogs (dogwalker:). I never thought that this would happen as I really looked after my health. After the initial shock I decided to research everything diabetes and have done a 180 on food and exercise. I notice that the neuropathy is not so bad after exercise, but it is still there. I have found some wonderful videos Doc Jones has on YouTube and the Homestead school and hoping that my new knowledge will alleviate the pain. I am so happy I became a student and taking charge of my health! Thank you to all of you who posted on this thread!

Your hops and/or skullcap tincture topically would likely work really well for pain. Anti-inflammatory herbs internally could be good as well. Look at the Joint support formula’s herbs. Have a look at the Pain Management lessons. Lots of good info there.

Also, Alpha-lipoic acid often really helps diabetic neuropathy. You can get it anywhere they sell vitamins and such. It’s an amino acid.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

                      Dr. Jones,

My first day here and I am already learning so much.  I am so appreciative that you take the time to pop in and help.  You’re amazing!

I have had Type 1 Diabetes for 52 years. I have struggled with foot neuropathy for many of those years.  The only thing I have ever found that works is pure “Frankincense”.  It is very expensive.  I am a very new student in this wonderful class.  I am hoping to find some other alternative herbs that can also help me.

Karen – tell your hubby thank you for his sacrifices for our country!  I’m just sorry he ended up with such issues.  I know I’m “late to the party” on this topic, but what about Teasel since it seems to like to work on “weird nerve pain” as Doc calls it.  Might be something good to try.  I’ve never tried it topically, but do use it for my old person aches and pains from time to time.

                          Karen,

I’m glad you posted this question as my mom has this too although not as severe as your husbands.  Because of your post I’m sure the wonderful peoples responses will help.  It’s my first day so I have much to learn.
Please also thank your husband for his service.  I’m deeply grateful.
