I have a friend with rheumatoid arthritis in their shoulder, systemic lupus, inflammation everywhere, but lots in the shoulder, and no gallbladder. This person thinks maybe the problems stem from a leaky gut but is afraid to do anything to upset the delicate balance. I suggested the leaky gut powder since the bentonite clay will pull and lock up toxins; marshmallow, licorice, and plantain will soothe and heal. My other thought for herbs to take internally is oregon grape root and dandelion root, which is everywhere around here, and they asked if not having a gallbladder would have a negative affect on taking these things. My thought is that if there isn’t a gallbladder then it’s going to affect the organs that are present. What can they do to assist the digestive system in the absence of the gallbladder?

As for addressing the RA, I was also going to make a tincture to spray on their shoulder with chamomile, st. john’s wort, skullcap, valerian, comfrey, and teasel and maybe grape leaf to help with rebuilding the cartilage.

I just want to make sure none of these herbs are immune stimulating in any way.. I didn’t think they are after listening to so many monographs and lectures on the different systems.

Hello Hannah, Here’s a quick note to share some research that I found when I was searching for answers to my frozen shoulder/pain. There is a study on the nih.gov site that states, “Yucca schidigera is a medicinal plant native to Mexico. According to folk medicine, yucca extracts have anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory effects.” They are actually talking about Rheumatoid Arthritis specifically in the paper. You can read the summary here … https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1440857/  I found this very interesting as I was searching for benefits of Yucca after reading Doc Jones’ mention that Yucca contains steriod like constituents.  You can read about Yucca here in the school.

For your question, I did a quick look thru Yucca monographs and all cite the above benefits and one or two suggest Immune “boosting” or “supporting” based on Vitamin C content (“a nutrient involved in the synthesis of collagen”), and no other elements or stimulating mechanisms. It states it is good for gluten free and diabetic diets.

It reminds of years ago before they finally discovered a microbe causing stomach ulcers; they’d beleived it was all stress and acid. Now that is common knowledge but it was news to doctors in my 20s. They are discovering a protozoan found in RA joints that are over populated in the stomach of the patients. Wow, isn’t that neat. A new cause or part of the cause of RA seems to be protozoan overpopulation in the gut. This study was published in 2006 so I’m not sure how new this information is to everyone else; but, it was news to me. 🙂

Add to the benefits, Yucca is anti-protozoan as well as some anti-bacterial properties. (The root is the medicine.) I hope this was useful info as you might simply add yucca root to your spray.

Best of luck and God speed her recovery!

Nothing in the leaky gut protocol will be complicated by the lack of a gallbladder. Also, nothing you do topically in a pain spray will impact the immune system.

Here’s the leaky gut lesson. It has some dietary recommendations in addition to the herbs.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
