Someone I recently was talking to, told me that he feels that his body no longer has the tolerance for stress that he did when he was younger. Now, he regular feel physical symptoms when he is feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Does anyone have favorite herbs for helping the body handle stress? I was thinking maybe some herbs in the mint family and oat straw and chamomile. Also wondering whether you should take these type of herbs on a daily basis to build the body up, of just at the time you are feeling that your body is responding to stress.

Hi Elena, I have been going through a lot of stress than normal this past year and it had really started taking a toll.  I have been taking ashwagandha daily for about 6 months now with occassional breaks (I believe Doc recommends taking an occasional break from herbs you take on a daily basis) and it has made a huge impact on my ability to handle stress.  Unfortunately, ashwagandha is not an herb I have (yet) been able to successful growing myself.  I’ve also ordered Doc’s oat straw tincture but have yet to try it.  Good luck! 🙂

Yes, I remember seeing much about Aswaganda as a good herb for stress. I’ve contemplated taking it myself lately–I’ve noticed that aging takes a toll on my body’s ability to deal with stress. I have just placed an order for many of Doc’s tinctures to try one herb at a time to evaluate how they interract with me. I plan to start an herb diary to journal this.

Siberian Ginseng is an adaptogen that is more gentle in it’s approach. It is better for those who’s body’s are already weak, so I would look into that. Doc has a formula for stress that has siberian ginseng and a couple other things in it, too.

It is also important to address where all the stress is coming from so he can work on addressing the root causes and not just the symptoms.

Hi. The main herb that my family uses to handle stress is valerian. Some people really don’t like it, but it’s always had a good effect on us. Reading about the herb, I find that most of us are the kind of person(thin, poor circulation) that benefit most from valerian, but it’s probably good for other people in smaller quantities.
