I have a chicken with droopy wings. When I look up on Google what could be the problem, it gives me 3 possibilities; injury, overheated or parasites. I have separated her to give her a chance to rest. If it is a parasite I am thinking that oregano and cayenne may be helpful to put in their feed. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

If it is parasites, it might be best to use a commercial de-wormer. Doc has mentioned several times that he feels those are pretty safe and effective. And I know with my quail when I noticed one that had symptoms of parasites, it was only a couple days until it was too late and she died while the medication was being shipped here. I’ve never heard of a chicken drooping its wing permanently from heat (I live in central TN so pretty hot here). But my chickens do hold their wings out a little when they are hot, but then pull them back against themselves when they cool back down.  I suppose you’ve already ruled out injury. That’s really strange. I hope you get it figured out.

We took her from the group and let her rest overnight. We woke up to a happy chicken whose wings were fine. So it must have been a small injury. Hooray!

Hi Lori! Oregano is wonderful for chickens and it’s easy to grow. My husband and I grow it and give to them even when they’re not showing signs of illness. According the book Gardening with Chickens, oregano is the only herb that has actually been studied by the commercial poultry industry for its anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties.

We use an herbal formula called Verm-X to treat  our chickens for parasites.  Have used it for over 10 years.  Works fantastic.  I never use commercial dewormers ,only  herbal or homeopathic.

I know this is late in the game to answer this question about droopy wings/parisites in chickens. I decided to post because I know others will come across this and maybe it will help them. I always appreciate any posts even late because it can help me to have multiple ideas and other’s experiences. I use the commercial dewormer, fenbendazole. I have used it they make it for chickens in pills that you can just open and sprinkle on food or you can get the liquid for goats and depending on the chickens weight you can dose appropriately. There are several calculations on line to help with the weight dosages. I have found it very safe and tolerated well even if there is some overdosing. I have also used fresh, crushed garlic and cayenne to expel worms. Verm-x is a natural dewormer that you can buy. Oil of oregano can also be added to the above garlic/cayenne mixture, (1 clove garlic and 1 Tbsp cayenne per 10 chickens.) If you don’t have a crumble or pelleted food that you can wet and make into a mash, you can use oatmeal to get the herbs/wormer in. If using a liquid wormer, I just squirt it into their mouth and wait for them to swallow. I have done natural and commercial with good luck.
