StudentUntil Doc Jones starts selling it in his store – how do I make it? Fruiting body only? Vodka only – or a hot water cooked extraction also? I’m not a mushroom person so this is alien to me – ANY help and guidance is greatly appreciated! Thanks 🙂

StudentHello Sharon, I make tincture from Reishi and Turkey Tail. If I made Lions Mane, I’d do the same. Just cut it up (the whole mushroom) and add 80 proof Vodka 1:5 ratio. You can make an infusion but it does not require decoction since it is soft tissue (not bark, resinous, or hard roots). Here is the tincture lesson from Doc (or check out infusion lesson if you want a tea)Â Â https://homesteadacademy.com/courses/homegrown-herbalist/sections/herbal-medicine-making/lessons/making-herbal-medicines-lesson-4-tinctures-glycerites-vinegars/
If you are inquring about Double Processing, I used to make it that way but Doc has said that it is overcomplicating it when the water in the alcohol will extract the water soluble consituents so it is not necessary. And if you do Dble Pcs you have to worry about shelf-life because the added water will reduce the alcohol content. My understanding is it must remain above 25% alcohol to avoid spoilage. I hope that is helpful to you.

StudentTopic AuthorThanks Dawn – I’m wondering if Doc has a video that I’ve missed on making mushroom tinctures. Seems to me that using ONLY the fruiting body fits better with the way that we do herbs though since the LM is typically grown on something like wheat, rice, or sawdust – none of which I really want in my tincture. I thought the double extraction process was redundant – but wondered if the fact that they are “cooking it” on a low simmer might not change the outcome. It does seem like the extra “cooking” step would water down the alcohol content. I see several companies doing this with their tincture products though. Hopefully Doc can weigh in on this. I want to get hubby on Lion’s Mane for his brain. Using the Memory and Alertness formula, but it’s not really changing anything for him. So before he gets any worse, I want to try LM to see if it improves him like many others claim it does for them.
