Has anyone come across some sort of reference chart or list that gives ideas for herb substitutions? Sometimes I’m wanting to make a formula but don’t have the exact herb, or the herb doesn’t grow in my area. I’d love a resource I could quickly check to see if there are any herbal alternatives with similar properties.

The best way to thnk about and approach that is by substituting based on actions. Most herbs do a dozen things so finding a substitute for an herb is impossible. But, finding another plant with the action you want is easier.

The good new is that we’re currently working on an amazing tool that will allow you to search based on herbal actions. So, if gumweed is in your formula becasue it’s a good expectorant but you don’t have any gumweed, you’ll be able to search for expectorants. If gumweed is in your formula because it’s a good muscle relaxant, you’ll be able to search for antispasmodics. It should be up and running very soon. Stay tuned. :0)

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Hey Doc, is that search based on herbal actions up and running yet?  I cannot seem to find it anywhere (maybe I’m just having a “brain dead day)!  Thanks in advance for the help!
