StudentI grew valerian root in my garden this year. I did not dig it up to check the roots, but it has stems and stems of long leaves that regrow quickly after I cut them. My question is, Do the leaves have a similar, albeit lesser calming effect like the root? Thanks!!!

StudentI’ve heard that they have the same qualities but milder (and better tasting) so I made a tincture with the leaves to I could try it out. I haven’t pressed it yet so am curious what others have to say.

Homestead InstructorThe leaves do have some similar but weaker properties to the root. I’ve never used them. If I wanted a leaf herb as a nervine or sedative I’d use skullcap or lemon balm or catnip or hops as all of those would be better choices than valerian leaf and just as easy to harvest.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Would any of these herbs mentioned in Doc’s reply be good to calm a Shitzu for grooming?

Homestead InstructorYup. Any of those.
I usually use one of these two formulas because I always have them on hand.
