Doc, if I’m remembering properly, you said the “x” in peppermint’s Latin name means it’s a cross between peppermint and spearmint. And I think you told us spearmint is not as strong as peppermint. So my question is, if spearmint isn’t as strong, why use a mix instead of straight up peppermint? And secondly, which peppermint is the strongest medicine? And thirdly, which is strong medicine and tastes great? Thanks a ton!

Mentha piperita is a hybrid. But it’s a very good mint medicinally and is stronger than spearmint (Mentha spicata). I use it all the time.
I also use Poleo mint (Mentha arvensis) which is also very strong.

Are all peppermints pretty strong medicine? Or are some weak?  I found a patch in the wild and don’t care for the flavor, but would it be just as strong medicine?

Could you explain how a hybrid of spearmint and peppermint turn out to be strong medicine, if spearmint isn’t by itself?

The stronger the peppermint flavor, the stronger the medicine.

As to how a hybrid of peppermint and spearmint can be storng when spearmint isn’t….

It’s the same way a tall red-headed guy and a short blond can have a tall redheaded kid with his mother’s nose.
