Our elderly cat (16ish) recently started leaving large puddles on our floor. She had always been well-trained to use the litter box, so we decided we should check into this. Turns out our vet said she has early stage chronic kidney disease. It seemed to start recently but this is probably because we had to start giving her only canned food as she was also losing her sense of smell so she would not eat food unless it was very stinky. This food apparently has more protein which has now affected her kidneys. We were considering a couple option. Knowing that she has to have the stinky food (fish primarily is what she can smell), we thought buying fish oil and adding it to other food may provide the smell without heavy protein. Also wondering about some supportive herbs for her kidneys. Thinking of Astragalus as it is supposed to help the kidneys especially with high protein diets. Then thinking of adding nettle seed as a kidney protectant. Let me know if you all have any thoughts or additions to this plan.

Astragalus and nettle seed are both great.
