StudentI have a trigger finger that has responded successfully three times to steroid injection. It starts acting up about six months later. Of course, hand surgeon wants to operate. I’d like to try herbal treatment. Compresses? I’d only be able to treat with compresses in the evening or overnight. Alcohol tincture? I would have to be with rubbing alcohol because I work in a high school and don’t want to smell like vodka. Lotion? Looking for suggestions. I’m willing ro make multiple treatments to use at different times. I’m aslo thinking arnica…where can I source it?

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorI’d approach it internally and topically.
Internally I’d do anti-inflammatory herbs like those in Joint Support.
Slide #9
Topically you could also do anti-inflammatories like those in Joint support. There is a Happy Joint lotion option here:
Or you can go to the Medicine Making lesson on lotions and learn to make your own. :0)
Making Herbal Medicines Lesson 6: Infused Oils, Salves & Lotions
Antispasmodic and nervine herbs might help as well. Any herb can be made into a liniment.
Arnica might be quite good. Most herb companies sell it.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentDoc, in using Joint Support topically, aren’t you going to do a great job of dying the skin yellow? I get using it internally, but externally???

StudentI wonder if a salve made with teasel, Solomon’s seal, mullein leaf infused in almond oil would help? You could experiment with adding other herbs like comfrey, St. John’s wort or arnica flowers into the infused oil, too. I don’t have a full fledged trigger finger, but I do have a finger that likes to click on the mouse at very inopportune times, and the first three herbs in salve have helped me gain a little control. I would love to hear what you find to work for you. Wishing you much luck.
