I have a large varicose vein down the back of one of my legs and many smaller ones throughout the calf and ankle area.  The large one can be particularly painful behind the knee.  I’ve had them since I was in high school.  (I believe I caused them by sitting with my leg tucked up under me on my chair all during my high school years which would have caused circulation issues in that leg over the long-term.  The pain behind the knee did not begin until I was much older.)

My question – Since it seems that the consensus in the medical world is that they are caused by damaged/defective valves in the veins, can these valves ever be healed/regenerated (not sure the proper term to use)?

If this is possible, please advise what might be helpful to this end.

Hi Sue! You will want to check out Doc’s lesson on the Cadiovascular system. He starts talking about Varicose Veins at the 17:46 mark

Cardiovascular System Part II: Pathology & Herbal Interactions (This lesson is being completely re-done. Stay tuned)

I noticed that horse chestnut cream was mentioned.  I would like to hear more about it and specifically how often to use and any interactions.

I’ve only seen one horse chestnut cream and it has other herbs mixed with it.  (Planetary Herbals Horse Chestnut Cream.. Contains:  Horse Chestnut Seed Extract, Butcher’s Broom Leaf Extract, Witch Hazel Bark Extract, White Oak Bark Extract, Myrrh Gum Extract, and Rosemary Leaf Oil.)

That looks like a good blend for varicose veins.

The valve damage is likely not reversible. The best we can do is manage and minimize the consequences of the damage.
