StudentI tried giving my daughter Uva Ursi every 2 hours to clear up a UTI. I also gave her D-mannose with cranberry. (I also tried MarshMallow root and chamomile when I found the Uva Ursi acting too slowly.)
I’m pretty disappointed because  I ended up having to give her antibiotics anyway.
Why didn’t it work? I had a UTI a few years back, and it worked for me. Why didn’t it work for my daughter?

StudentOne thing all medicines have in common is, they are not “one size fits all.” What works for one person or animal may not work as well in someone else. The beautiful thing is, there are often multiple herbs with the same properties. Sometimes you just have to experiment a little, sometimes an herb works better in synergy with other herbs, rather than alone. But… in the case of an infection that could become very serious very quickly, you may not want to take the time to play around, experimenting. Getting qualified medical treatment and a prescription for antibiotics isn’t always the end of the world. After her course of antibiotics is finished, follow up with some good prebiotic foods and probiotics, to replenish the “good gut bugs.” Also have a look at the lesson on the urinary tract, and some more of Uva Ursi’s “associates” so you will be better equipped to employ an alternate choice of helpers the next time your daughter, or anyone else close to you, gets a urinary infection.

Homestead InstructorSome questions to consider: How often were you giving the herbs? How much water was she drinking? Did you also do some immune support? Did she restrict simple sugars while sick?
All of those things can be big factors with bladder infections. And, unfortunately sometimes some herbs are the best solution for some individuals or some instances.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentHi Doc et al, I just had the same problem. My daughter is great at drinking water (2+ 40 oz bottles per day), stopped any sugar which included drinking cranberry juice with no sugar/no other juices added, no caffeine, etc, stated additional Vitamin C couple times a day. I started with the uva ursi formula a couple times a day, then moved to 3-4 times per day, then made a bulk concentrated infusion which she took every 3 hours for another day and a half (then I stated worrying that I might hurt her kidneys). It seemed to curb it for up to 3 hours but never kicked it. She had Echinacea and Oregon Grape root in the teas to help her fight the bacteria. The marshmallow in the formula seemed to be the most beneficial as it did soothe her for a few hours each time. … finally we had to take her to dr on 7th day
Because she is allergic to Doxy antibiotics, the walk in doctor office gave her something odd that warned about danger to the kidneys on the insert (Nitrofurantion?) so we waited one more day and went to her Integrative Dr who gave her something else (just this morning). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated so I don’t feel like I just am a failure.
Like when is time to call it, how much herb is too much per infusion or total per day … I guess I could have given a separate immunity support tincture along with the herbal teas ? But I don’t feel confident giving too much for kidneys to process, especially with a urinary issue … words of wisdom would be so much appreciated.

Homestead InstructorFor UTIs, The UTI formula and lots of water usually does the trick. If it’s a serious one, I’ll add Immunity Support and Bugbuster. I usually do that every 3-4 hours.
Recipes for all those formulas are here:
