StudentMy 9 pound maltipoo doesn’t like several of the herb powders that I have tried to sneak into her food. I want to make a heart tonic tincture for her because she has a heart murmur.
What is a good menstruum to use for a dog? Could I use something like avocado or olive oil? What about MCT oil?

StudentTopic AuthorIn my research, I have come to believe that the olive or avocado oils won’t extract as well as I would like. I suggested MCT oil because it is often used in the CBD tinctures.  Any ideas as to whether that would be a good extractant? (I think I just made up a word! HA!) 🙂

StudentHi Susan, I would also steer clear of the avocado oil, since most dogs shouldn’t have avocado. We give our dog a fish oil, but not sure if you could tincture with that. But maybe the smell would help mask the powders. Have you tried putting the powder in some broth or water and pour over food? We have been able to get our little guy to take Doc’s histamine and immunity powder that way. I don’t have experience with MCT oil. Curious other peoples thoughts on this. Can I ask which herbs are you going to tincture?

StudentTopic AuthorGREAT ideas Herb. THANK YOU! My canine baby girl loves avocados and it never occurred to me that they might hurt her. Thank you for that tip. Fortunately, I have only attempted to use that to extract the herbs for only one formula. I can toss that without too much loss.
As far as putting the formula in a powder and giving it to her to pour over her food, I haven’t tried that because she is a VERY particular little girl. I tried to sneak some ashwagandha powder into her food and she wouldn’t have ANYTHING of it!
I made the heart tincture for her with a combination of the herbs in Doc Jones’ heart support formula and a different heart support extract that I purchased from Amazon that had listed their herbs on the label. The formula is as follows: 2 hawthorn berry, 1 motherwort, 1 dandelion leaf, 1 nettle, 1 fo-ti powder, 1 shizandra berry, 1 gingko, 1 gotu kola. The Amazon extract listed deionized water and glycerin as the menstruum. Doc Jones advises against glycerin, as we know.
I have purchased other tinctures that include MCT as the menstruum, so I added organic MCT oil to the above formula. We are still in the extraction period for that herb, but I should be able to start administering to her in the next few weeks. Because MCT has a mild, sweetish taste, I expect that she won’t turn her nose up to it.
The important thing is that it makes a difference for her. She is almost 12 which means our time with her is running out. Hopefully, with all of this great support from HGH, we will be able to have her around much longer than her older sisters that have already crossed over that rainbow bridge. There are few things harder than saying goodbye to a beloved fur baby.
Again, THANK YOU for your generous suggestions.
