StudentI’d love some ideas for how folks… how do I put this? Organize their protocols? For example, let’s say someone in the house has a headache, or a stomachache, and I want to be able to look up the symptom/malady/etc., and have at-the-ready a personal list of things that I know work, to refer to and administer as I discern best. I’ve currently got a binder of recipes, and I’ve got a small stack of herbalism books I use as well. But I want to make my own personal symptom-based system. I’ve heard from an herbalist on a podcast that she actually uses a recipe book with notecards, which I think is a fine idea, but I’d love to hear what others have used! Thanks!

StudentI have the worst memory these days and I have had the same ideas about wanting to quickly retrieve my class information. I know that we will always have access to the online courses but, in the event of a power outage, apocalypse, etc., I also want to have access to a paper version of my notes from the class, etc.
Since there is such a large volume of class material, I am currently taking detailed notes using Pages/Word software. I have page numbers automatically inserted onto each page by the software. Class modules are then organized into three ring binders. Three ring binders are assigned numbers. As I am going back over the notes to reread, study, etc. the data is then indexed into Numbers/Excel software.
I have done it this way so that I can add a new entry at any time and then be able to keep the entire file alphabetized for easy retrieval.
An example of a single entry that has five vertical columns is: COLUMN 1 – fevers – diaphoretic (search term) | COLUMN 2 – Immune & Lymphatics, 2 (module name) | COLUMN 3 – help to make the fever work faster and to get its job down – yarrow, (the best one) elder, boneset, sage, peppermint, hyssop, catnip (my notes about the topic) | COLUMN 4 – 2, page 3 (book and page # of the notes | COLUMN 5 – 42:00 time stamp for that info on the video.
It looks really involved and tedious, but it isn’t really any different than the kinds of notes that I take anyway when I am studying. I am simply taking the extra steps to make that information as retrievable as possible.
I hope that all of this isn’t too complicated.
I would love some feedback on how to improve this process. Any other ideas?

StudentThat’s what I’ve been thinking…electronically eneter so it is searchable, then printed for times electronics aren’t useful. I was thinking about using tags, but that is a feature I have to learn about, as I’m older and tags are something I’ve not used before.

StudentWow, I feel like a caveman compared to your method. Very amazing what you figured out to be organized. Thanks for sharing this, it will help so many 🙂

StudentI would love an app made for this. Where you can enter your own database of herbs and how you’ve found them to be effective. Then you could have a search function on it. Maybe you could even somehow connect to other people’s databases and get suggestions on what herbs they use for a given problem. The only downside is that it is dependent on a device. So should have a paper backup.

StudentThey are actually working on a module for the school where they are going to have the different herbs ranked by effectiveness. So for instance Comfrey would get the highest score in the vulnerary category while Plantain would be lower.

StudentI just make a point of memorizing or cataloguing the various properties (vulnerary, demulcent, antimicrobial, etc.) of the herbs that I have available to me, and don’t worry so much about symptoms. When people come to me asking about herbs for their symptoms, I then ask some questions about the mechanism or root of the problem, so I can suggest plants based on their properties and actions.

StudentThis has been my approach as well. And the more that I watch the videos that Doc has in the class, the repetition cements what the herbs do more and more

StudentUnfortunately, my memory isn’t what it used to be. Working on improving it through the herbs in Doc Jones’ formulas. For that reason, I am actually trying to catalog everything what I can for quick and easy reference.
SO GRATEFUL for the opportunity to learn and be a part of this course material. Could not be in a better place!

StudentGreat question and one I am asking myself too, as I get so bogged down with paper, notebooks, and books. I use my iPad a lot with several note taking apps, that I am considering index cards, both physical cards in a box and on my iPad. Mostly on my iPad. But I still want hard copies of notes, so…
