I have only just started the course and need some help, last week we had a massive lightning storm and my horse ran into the fence when lightning struck her paddock. She put picket it her inner upper front leg. A 5cm opening and the stake potentially went up another 10cm. I used colloidal silver to wash the wound and covered while waiting for the vet. She irrigated inside as high as possible and put 3 stitches in, leaving a space at the bottom for drainage. She has got every bandage off so far. No matter what I use. I left it off and everything looked better, cleaner and was healing really well for 4 day. Until tonight, when she has opened up the two bottom stitches and the he wound is open about a cm.

I am in two mind’s about getting it redone. She is not overly active usually but the mozzies have been bad and bugs annoy her greatly which is why I think the stitchers have popped open. The area of the leg doesn’t open when she walks.

I have used a plantain poultices on a calf with a deep leg ulcer with success for but I am not sure how to manage this with my horse. She is 24 and I have had her 21years. She means the world to me.
I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Oh Pamela, I’m so sorry about that! I’m sure the vet will have good ideas. I had a donkey that got attacked by a dog. He had terribly wounds with flesh missing as well as gashes all over. It was way too much of a mess to stitch up or bandage. So we rinsed with colloidal silver over all his wounds twice a day. We used some Wonder Dust (I think it’s called that) to help keep it dry as it was the middle of summer and the flies were terrible. Then applied comfrey every other day. Every time we applied comfrey, the next day there would be all this new flesh grown in. It took about six weeks but he healed up flawlessly. Only some scars left.

Just thought I’d share that experience as encouragement that I’m sure your girl will be able to heal up.

            Hi Pamela,

Sorry for the slow reply. I was in the hospital for the last half of January for some surgery and recovery.

I assume your vet got things buttoned up again. When possible, closing a wound is the quickest route to healing.

For wounds that can’t be closed, the protocols in the Wound Management lessons will heal up about anything.

UPDATE: A bit overdue, sorry. Her leg is completely healed and you wouldn’t even know it happened. She has no lameness, scar, lumps or change to her hair in the area at all.
Thanks for the advice and encouragement
