StudentFirst, apologies if I didn’t see this answered elsewhere. I promise I looked! My kiddo has had a great experience breastfeeding until now. Yesterday, she developed a clogged milk duct, and she says it hurts pretty badly. She is taking Mellow Mommy and Lactation Support as needed (and l9ves them!), but what can she do to help clear this clog? She’s 25, first baby (my healthy, wonderful babygrand!), not on any other meds, just using the Mellow Mommy and Lactation Support as needed, as stated above. She is pretty healthy generally, works full-time, and pumps like there’s no tomorrow, until now. Can any of you lovely people help me help my girlie? She’s 6 hours away and I think that makes me feel even worse for her! Thanks in advance!

StudentHopefully it has cleared by now but Echinacea tincture is the way to go. I used Susan Weed’s dosage recommendation copied as follows and it worked wonders for me when I had blocked milk ducts and a bout of mastitis: “1 drop for every 2 pounds of body weight. A dropperful (which looks like half a dropperful) is about 25 drops of tincture. So I use a dropperful for children 25-50 pounds. Two dropperfuls for those weighing 50-100 pounds. Three dropperfuls for up to 150 pounds. Four for up to 200, and so on. I take the full dose as often as every 1-2 hours in a crisis, or every 3-4 hours if I catch the infection at an early stage. And I expect to see relief within the first 24 hours. As I do, I space the doses further and further apart until all symptoms are gone.”
Also, hot baths to express by hand and release the block. She should be able to feel and see in the water when the block is released.

StudentTopic AuthorThank you so much! Took me a while to get back here, but yes, she did get it cleared quickly. Thank you for the heads up on echinacea too! She has been taking the Mellow Mommy and Lactation Support tinctures as needed, but the clogs started becoming an issue out of the blue. Then she and I talked, and she is having some emotional distress over a family relationship, and the clogs seem to come when she is feeling worst. Hot showers seem to be her ticket, but she agreed to call me when upset like that so I can help her through it and we can clear that “clog.” It amazes me how her emotional status has been influencing her physical status. It has been so good, though, to figure it out.
I can’t take credit…when she couldn’t figure out what was going on, I tried to go back to basics and heard Doc say, “what is your dis-ease?” I kept seeing the word written like that in my mind. So I asked her if anything was bothering her, et voila. Thanks, Doc!
And I will pass on the echinacea tincture to her. I’m sure it will be a welcome arrow in her quiver!

StudentI have had clogged ducts/mastitis many times with my five kids. I always keep a bottle of sunflower lecithin around to keep the fat in the milk emulsified. Also I find it happens when I am really dehydrated so keeping up on water really helps me! Finally, I also always do ice instead of heat- I’ve had mastitis many times but I’ve also avoided many cases of mastitis by icing the clog before it can get swollen and infected. When I do get mastitis I do one clove of garlic (juiced with lemon apple and celery for taste!) three times a day until it’s gone (usually a day or less) . Hope this helps for the future!

StudentI second this! I recently got mastitis and I do think the sunflower lecithin helped a lot. I took echinacea, sunflower lecinthin, drank water (tried to get a gallon in throughout the day), massaged duct/nursed, slept as long as I could with a cold compress and then repeated. I was so blessed to have my mom come over and help with the kids while I slept. Rest is so important and sometimes so hard to get as mamas. It was significantly better in 24 hours.
