I have done a search but I have been unable to find any information about the Sweetgum tree that grows in my area.  Did I miss it?  I really want to learn the uses and how to harvest the beneficial parts of this tree. If there isn’t one, will the school make one?

Hi Barbara, I’ve seen articles about sweet gum balls (when green) can be tinctured for medicinal use similar to pine needles. It contains shikimic acid which is a strong antiviral. This is the same constituent used in Tamiflu that can be prescribed for the flu when it can be started in the first couple days of onset of symptoms. So, I would use it similarly, at early onset of flu symptoms.

Hi Barbara, I’ll do a lesson on it. It’s a good plant. Dawn’s right about the shikimic acid. It has some good antiviral effects especially against influenzas.
