StudentHello team. I have a question about using comfrey for healing a broken bone (arm) when a metal plate has been inserted to hold the bones together. I read a comment from someone online (linked to a medicinal facebook page) that said that you shouldn’t use comfrey to help heal broken bones when a metal plate has been inserted. They said that the comfrey can make your body reject the metal implant. I have tried to find studies or other information to find out more, however nothing has shown up. Has anyone got any knowledge about this? Is it safe to use?
Thank you very much

StudentMonica, let’s hope Doc pipes in to clear this up. He has probably put in many hundreds of plates over the years. Logically I don’t see any issue from it since it is only speeding up the bodies healing process by cell division and not actually taking over the healing process Willy nilly. Come on Doc, put that sandwich down lol.

StudentTopic AuthorI just saw another comment on this topic on a herbalist’s facebook. It was someone commenting and they said the following… Quote “Are there any cautions when using comfrey? I heard something about comfrey alerting the body to reject things like dental implants, joint replacements, metal screws and anything synthetic, foreign or artificial item in the body.” The reply was – Quote ” Comfrey is not to be applied with dental implants, knee or hip replacements. It will alert the body to reject these.”
This is all I have been able to find on the topic. Has anyone else found any information in your searches?

Homestead InstructorI always put my surgical patients on comfrey after I screwed them back together. The only time I don’t like comfrey for fractures is on joint or vertebral fractures. I worry that exuberant bone growth/healing might cause some bridging between the bones that might be problematic.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
