Hi Bonnie, Where do you live? What zone? Elderberry seems to do well in many different places. We planted York and John’s, I believe, and York is doing great. If you have a friend or neighbor growing elderberry, you can cut off a new shoot, place it in water, and once it grows roots, you can plant it.
Bonnie, I have recently discovered that I have Elderberry bushes on my property. What a pleasant surprise. But I have no idea what type of elderberry plant it is. I should do more research as the berries are green now and I am hopeful I beat the deer and birds to the ripened berries!!
I have what I’m 99.9999% sure is Elderberry in my back ditch, but the stems holding the berries never really gets red it stays green even when the berries are dark and ripe. I wonder if its the verity of Elderberry it is. I live in Florida and the leaves are narrow and the berries have the classic umbrella shape clusters. Wish a I could add a picture or to and show what I am talking about. Anyone familiar with Florida Elderberry trees?
I just bought some Elderberry plants from RiverHillsHarvest.com. They seem quite knowledgeable about Elderberries. You may be able to reach out to them. I know that I did learn that the Ranch variety of Elderberry grows well in Florida, but I’m sure other varieties grow there as well.
Black Elder, Sambuccus nigra. It turns into a nice tree and stays where you plant it. Don’t get the cultivar with the weird, frilly leaves get the original model.
