My Aunt, age 86, contracted a virus, which led to Pneumonia. She got an antibiotic for the pneumonia, but the virus has left her with a bone shaking cough. Pharmaceutical and OTC cough medicines are not working and they have no medicines for viruses. What should I suggest for her? This woman is like my mother. Many thanks.

Hi Jeanne, I’m no expert but I can offer what helped me get through some nasty recurring symptoms caused by a mix of viral infection and mold exposure.

Echinacea, Thyme, Mullein, Astragalus, and Lemon Balm (with Peppermint or Ginger as an activator/flavor mask) – I also took Stinging Nettle and Alfalfa for the nutrition and allergy support for my own issue with the mold.

There may be stronger combinations or an herb better suited to her specific type of virus (I remember Doc goes into great detail about which herbs show activity against which types in the herb monographs), but for me, these worked wonderfully!

My guess is that the bugs are gone at this point. I’d use some cough suppressant and expectorant herbs.

Respiratory COF and Respiratory EXP formulas are good. Both recipes are here.
