Has anyone here successfully used herbs in companion planting  for pest control? I’m particularly interested in combating squash bugs. I’ve heard dill and nasturtium are both good contenders for that. I would love to know your experience. Thanks!

          Hi Megan,

I can personally say I saw far fewer Squash Bugs in my garden when using a combination of white icicle radishes and nasturtiums among my summer and winter squash! It won’t completely rid you of them, but it keeps their overall population to a manageable number that can be picked off or responsibly sprayed with an insecticidal soap solution. Dill is also great for keeping cucumbers and tomatoes safe from beetles and horn worms, but some say dill deadens the tomato flavor.

Plus I found the nasturtium are a very tasty addition to salads and soups. The leaves and flowers are amazing against ear or sinus infections when made into a tincture and taken as soon as you notice any pain or fullness in the ear. Munching on them fresh throughout the day seems to work well too.

Thank you! I do have nasturtium seeds planted throughout my garden. They’re a few years old, so I may need to get some new ones to grow them. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Have you tried Diamataceous Earth? It works well for many pests.
