I’m dealing with and 88 year old women who has been on Vicoden for 25 years for severe back pain. Due to medical-system snafus, she is unable to get her prescription, maybe for 3 months. I’m not sure what to suggest to her, if anything. The pain relieving herbs that I know are more gentle, and I’m unsure about pharma interactions should the opioid still be in her system. Ideas?

Topical tinctures won’t interact with pharmaceuticals at a significant level.

For back pain, nervines (like hops, skullcap, etc…) antispasmodics (cramp bark) topically are often great. Have a look at the Pain Management lessons (Especially #1 & #3)for some good specifics.

          Pain Management III: Specific Interventions

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Were you able to figure out something?  I have a 60 year old sister who has severe pain from osteoarthritis and trauma to her upper back x 20 years ago that is transitioning from hydrocodone to suboxone with her pain management practitioner.  She would like to try herbal interventions; I am still in beginning lessons of course and can’t suggest anything yet. Topicals sound like an excellent possibility.
