I have a young mare who is seriously making herself ill. Vet has been out numerous times treating her for very mild colic. Back story is that she was sold when her former owners had to move out of state over a year ago. Up to that point she had been loved and very well cared for. During the past year things did not go well and she ended up in a new state. No physical abuse to the best of my knowledge. The problem now is that she feels a great sense of betrayal and abandonment which seems to be manifesting itself in these mild colic symptoms. Vet can find nothing wrong with her. Would a course of St. John’s Wort be a good plan? I’ve tried Oatstraw, but so far I have noticed no improvement at all. No worse but also no better. How much time should elapse before I see a change? Are there any other herbs you would recommend? She is a really sweet mare and I truly want to help her.  Thanks for any advice

Hi. I would try LotusWei’s Joy Juice spray. I use this with my dog and seen that it immediately makes her happy! You could also reach out to Lotus Wei’s customer service to see what they recommend. Is there a possibility of this mare getting a horse friend to hang out with?

This happened here with a 6-year old Mustang mare we adopted.  She would be aggressive or catatonic.  Putting other horses in her pasture solved that problem.  The interaction didn’t let her spend time grieving for her lost friends.  Also, time helped and having structure in her daily schedule.  She is probably missing her friends more than her owners.

Thank you for your suggestions. She did have other horses with her, including one from her previous home. In the end a combination of St. John’s Wort and Oatstraw worked. She is doing great now. Again, thanks for getting back to me.

Kim,  did you use St John’s wort tincture?

Yes, I did. She’s a very happy girl now. You’d never know she had any problems
