Hi all.  Hubby has a shoulder that is bone on bone, and at his “advanced” age, he doesn’t want to have to have another shoulder surgery – especially since the bone on bone requires a more complicated surgery than the previous rotator cuff surgery that he’s had (according to the osteo guys).  So is there any salve, lotion, tincture (either internal or topical) that might help with the shoulder?  He doesn’t want to keep getting their shot for the pain and inflammation – we’d rather go herbal (and/or essential oil assist) if we can get any healing/relief from the herbal method!

There are so many herbs that help with pain. I have the Rest Easy herbs, and I made them into a lotion. It really helps with my pain. I understand that echinacea may help with cartilage, but I don’t know if it can regrow it like you all need. That sounds so painful. I hope you find something that helps.

I read that Teasel is also good for mending broken bones and torn connective tissues, as well as handling pain. I don’t know if that might apply to your situation. I would apply the herbs on the outside as well the inside. I understand that Comfrey is good for bones and plantain is good for healing. I’ve only used them topically, myself.

Right now he is using a comfrey/plantain tincture – but of course there’s no way to know for quite a while if it’s doing anything.  I thought I remembered Doc saying somewhere that this combination is good for ligaments/tendons/bones – but the memory isn’t what it used to be, so I could be mixed up on that (yes, I do take the memory tincture – but it has a lot to overcome!).  So if this isn’t the right remedy for him, would someone nudge me in the right direction for some healing.  He’s of an age that he doesn’t want any more surgeries – says he will live with the pain first!

You are on the right track… Doc has a formula called bone tissue and cartilage. It has comfrey, plantain, echinacea, garlic and lobelia. I got the powder and made it into a tincture. I use topically. If it were me, I would gather the plantain, echinacea, garlic and lobelia, to take orally and use the comfrey by itself,  topically. He can also do soaking baths with comfrey in the bath.

Thanks Anne.  No bathtub here – shower only!  But my bigger question is whether any of these “remodel” the bone or connective tissue to the point of repair.  Sure wish Doc still had time to join in here like he used to – I miss him and his great insights on our many questions here.

Bone on bone is tough to fix. Anne Treesh’s answer about the Bone Tissue Cartilage blend is the best I can do to stimulate repair but honestly, managing the pain is probably all you’ll be able to do. Joint support internally and hops and/or teasel topically. Have a look at the pain management lessons for other good info.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
