StudentOne thing I still have nagging my brain is how to use an existing TINCTURE as part of a formula. The one I’m kind of stuck on is gumweed since it just seemed to be much nicer (questionable term since it was a sticky mess of massive proportions) to deal with as a fresh herb tincture vs trying to dry it – thus I have no dried herb – only tincture to work with. So in a formula that has several parts, I have all as dry herb except one of them that I only have as a tincture – how do I make this work right? I’m sure if I were smarter, I could figure this out, but it’s just not coming to me! Thanks.

StudentAre you making a tincture blend/formula? I usually tincture all my herbs separately and then blend them into the formula. I do this for a couple of reasons. 1) if I only want a small amount of a formula then there is little waste. 2) I can use each tincture for different formulas. 3) there may be an herb in the formula that I want to ensure I am not sensitive to. Such as Valerian Root I cannot use it traditionally… it hypes me up instead of relaxes me.
If I am making a dry tea blend or syrup, I add the tincture to the cup of tea or the syrup before taking it. I am sure this is not the only way to do it. It is just what I would do if I was putting together a formula and had one herb in tincture form.

StudentTopic AuthorChrista & Greg – Appreciate your help. Sorry to be late answering! I am trying to make formulas with powders (with the exception of the ones that I don’t have/can’t get as powder. I would prefer not to just make more simples and combine them, because I have a pretty good collection of those, so I don’t really want to just make more of them if possible to save space. Though I have to admit that it is “simpler”!

StudentI would just tincture everything individually and then add them together in the portions you want for the formula. I don’t really ever make formulated tinctures, I just take a bit from each of the herbs I want, throw it into a glass with some water and drink it that way

StudentThat is how I take mine as well but I do have a blend that I made of each herb separately and then made its own bottle by adding equal parts of each herb I wanted.
