StudentMy son was in a motorcycle accident last week and has a compound break of his tibia, fractured fibula and ankle and shoulder. He had surgery 10 days ago and had a boot but is able to now unwrap the dressing. I have been cautious to use comfrey or anything on his leg yet since I didn’t want the external wound to heal faster than internal (the no puncture wound comfrey rule). I have used a comfrey tincture spray on his should and knee but not the rest of his leg that has a lot of stitches. At what point can I use the comfrey tincture on his leg? And in the meantime is a plantain/calendula tincture ok to use?

StudentAs I understand it, the no comfrey for puncture rules has more to not trapping bacteria in. After 48 hours, I use is liberally. My son got stitches and they kept the skin together but it wasn’t healing well. After 4 days I got fed up with the poor stitching job and just slathered it in a comfrey, lemon balm and calendula salve. 24 hours later, the wound was closed up and within a few days, we removed the stitches. If it were me and my kid and it had been 10 days, I would definitely be using comfrey there and at least around the outer edges to encourage healing of both the wound and the bone.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use comfrey on a post-surgical wound. I don’t put it right on the stitches, but anywhere near the incision it will do the trick.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
