StudentHello everyone!
I have a relative who is dealing with severe mental breakdowns and depression. It seems to be a problem that runs in the family on her side and usually appears around the age of 20. She doesn’t want to go on any anti-depressants because she realizes how dangerous they are and that she may never get off of them it she starts taking them. She is young and healthy. She fears that she will die and that her husband will remarry which causes severe anxiety for her. Even though she is perfectly healthy she is afraid that she has ALS because her ankle has been twitching… its all in her head but causes anxiety like nothing I have ever seen. She always has to have people with her because she cannot stand to be alone and needs people to keep her distracted so that she doesn’t overthink everything and have an anxiety attack. She cries often and looks so depressed and down. Does anyone have any suggestions? If so, I would GREATLY appreciate any information!
Thanks again!

StudentHi Ellie,
Thank you for wanting to help. I have very little experience with this area. I do know that TrueHope is a supplement company that specializes in these areas. For herbs, I agree with Greg – start with oat straw. I would also start with the highly nutritives like alfalfa, burdock root, stinging nettle leaf. Then I would do the healing gut section. Our gut health impacts our emotional and mental health. I hope she finds relief.

StudentTopic AuthorHi Lisa,
Thank you for recommending the TrueHope supplement company. It looks like a great place to obtain high quality products. I am already looking into supporting her gut health and nervous system so hopefully this can help balance her emotions. Great suggestions!
Thanks so much!

StudentI’m so sorry to hear that, that must be really tough. I would recommend starting with some oatstraw right away to try and help calm her nerves down while you research some other things. Unfortunately I don’t think herbs alone are going to help fix her anxiety, although there are a number that will help (passionflower and california poppy to name a couple.)
She might find some help in journaling down her thoughts and trying to think through why she feels these things will happen. I heard that J. Arthur Rank (one of the early pioneers in film in Great Britain) found he could not stop worrying, Rank was a devout Christian so he told God that he would only worry on Wednesdays (funny right?) So, whenever he would find himself worrying about something, he would write it down and put it in his “worry box” and go on with his day. When Wednesday came around, he would open up the box and found that maybe 1/3rd of things that he had written down still required his attention, and the rest he would throw away.
