I just read this and wonder about using some in my alcohol tinctures since both hubby and I do not enjoy the way the alcohol makes our tongues feel as we hold the tincture (even for a really short time) under our tongues (here’s the text from the book):
Glycerin, considered a “stronger” solvent and preservative than either wine or vinegar, has enjoyed a quicker revival in the modern herbal medicine- making world (maybe not as a star performer, but certainly as a popular supporting actor).
So the question in my mind is if I wanted to “dull the sharpness” of the alcohol and make the stuff taste a bit better – instead of honey or maple syrup AFTER the tincture is made, might it be more potent and beneficial to include some glycerine into the tincture making process to help extract and make it taste better (two birds with one stone)? If so, what proportion of glycerine might be both beneficial and better tasting?

On page 38 of The Homegrown Herbalist, Doc Jones says that glycerin can be substituted for tincture, but last for about 6 months in the refrigerator. He recommends using 2 parts distilled water to 3 parts glycerin. He use 1 gram of dried herb to every 5 cc of liquid. Hope this helps

Thank you Paige, but actually I’m asking about using some IN my alcohol tinctures to help with the alcohol astringency and taste. The alcohol is just too strong for our taste buds, so I’m hoping that the glycerine will help “tame the tingle”!

You certainly could add glycerine after the alcohol tincture is made but doing so will markedly diminish the alcohol’s preservative properties. I’d just put the tincture in some juice When you take it. :0)

Thank you Doc! I will keep it out of the alcohol tinctures then – but what about an ACV extract/acetum? I absolutely detest the taste of vinegar (I would love to dial down my “super-taster” self so that I can like more foods and beneficial drinks instead of the yuck factor kicking in)!

You can dilute the vinegar tinctures any way you like when you actually take them. Adding anything to them before will make them have zero preservative power. The only herbal vinegars I use are for salad dressing. Alcohol is vastly better in all respects.

Ok. So can we make vitamin/mineral tonics another way? I thought vinegar was “required” for these properties – even though it tastes like buffalo pee to me. Speaking of which, I am a “super taster” (highly sensitive taste buds) and would love to dial that down a bit. Is there anything for that?
On the opposite side of the coin, hubby got CO*ID last December and STILL can’t smell or taste worth a hoot. Is there something we can use to bring it back? Almost funny that I’m hyper on taste and smell, and he’s almost completely null on both. There’s humor there somewhere, but I missed it.

What do you mean by a vitamin/mineral tonic? Do you mean like an herb formula or something else?
I was actually going to recommend Covid for calming the taste buds. It worked great for me and my wife. LOL.
Both of our tasters are starting to work again after about 6 months. Sharik Peck the inventor of the Rezzimax Tuner has been having success turning taste buds and noses back on after Covid.

Sorry, missed your post here. Covid did turn off my smeller for about 2-4 weeks, but it came back as strong as before! Hubby is just over a year now, and his still doesn’t work 🙁
By vitamin/mineral tonic, I mean an extract that pretty much replaces vitamins. I have read that alcohol doesn’t extract minerals and such very good, so we were looking for something to boost the vitamins and minerals in our diet without pills.
