I purchased Comfrey powder. The plan was to use it for bone health. I started an oil infusion and a tincture yesterday. Something told me to put some of each on the back of my arm before placing it in the cupboard to age.

I immediately, I started to get an itchy rash with both. With the tincture, it almost developed into blisters. I washed it off, applied some plantain salve and they both disappeared within about 15 min.

…..I’m assuming this is an allergic reaction. My questions are……

Might I also have trouble taking any of your tinctures internally that might contain this plant? Should I be extra careful not to buy them if they do?

Might I have the same reaction w a certain family of herbs? what to watch out for.

Ya know I’ve watched several YouTube’s on herbs and haven’t heard anyone talk about allergies to anything. But, I’m assuming it does exist like anything else!

Is there anything else for bone health I could use instead?

Wow –it’s a good thing you listened to that “still small voice!” I’m no expert, but I would say it’s a safe bet you are allergic, and you should not take comfrey, just to be safe. As for other plants that can improve bone health (are you needing to increase bone density/slow osteoporosis?). Leafy green vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli are excellent for that sort of thing. As for the topical, vulnerary properties of comfrey, it’s fortunate that there are so many other plants that are also great for healing cuts and wounds and soothing the skin. I think from now on, you would be wise in purchasing any herbal formulas custom made without comfrey, just to be safe. You’ve probably already answered all of your own questions yourself by now, but I just wanted to validate your concerns and let you know I agree with your line of reason.
