Aloha I’m Merissa. I live on the island of Kaua’i with my husband, 8 cats, and 4 adopted hens. One of my cats is a special needs kitty who survived a terrible accident resulting in very high maintenance care. Currently, one of our adopted hens is sick with a respiratory condition that I’m desperately trying to help her get out of.

I got interested in herbal medicine after many years of trying to solve personal health issues with traditional doctors who always never knew what was wrong with me. I went from doctor to doctor and finally ended up in a naturopath’s office where I learned many eye opening things that got my attention. That visit decades ago got me interested in herbal medicine. Through the years I’ve purchased many books on herbal medicine but never took a course such as this. After watching Doc Jones on Youtube and loving his teaching style I knew I had to learn from him and join this course.

I enjoy making Hawaiian leis and started growing a few of my own plants for lei making. After growing lei making plants I started learning to grow food and herbs without pesticides…so difficult with many hungry pests here. We have two avocado trees, a large Chico tree, sour sop (graviola) trees, lilikoi (passionfruit), papaya, starfruit, moringa, lemongrass, Hawaiian chili pepper, Hawaiian Olena (turmeric), and ornamental tropicals many of what I planted in our backyard on less than a quarter acre. One day I’d love to have more space for growing as this is my parents property and not mines😅–Hawaii is one of the most expensive states to live in the USA, so that dream will be in the far future.

Enough of my chit chat. I’m happy to be here to learn and also get my cat and chicken well.
